About Alpine County
Alpine County sits entirely inside the Sierra Nevada, bordered by Nevada's Douglas County to the northeast and California's El Dorado, Amador, Tuolumne, and Mono counties. It's the only county in California with no incorporated city or town — Markleeville, its county seat, is an unincorporated community.
The county's economy leans on outdoor recreation: Kirkwood Mountain Resort sits partly within its borders, and the surrounding national forest land draws hikers and skiers well outside the roughly 1,200 people who live there year-round.
